Letter To the Editor:
Will our signifigance diminish when intelligent
life
drops us an email
from
the Crab Nebula? NO. Astronomy
didn't exile us
to the rim of a
minor galaxy. It
exalted us,
returned us to the position
we once knew
we held —
the center of the universe.
Take a globe, close your eyes, touch any point on
the surface. All the world falls away in circles from it.
That’s the center. Pick a point in the universe. Would
not a sphere — ever-expanding from that point —
encompass all there is? That’s the center. Repeat
until convinced. Now we know.
We are the center. So is everywhere else.
In 1968, San Francisco was the center of the world.
So are we all.
